The human body can be trained and shaped in various ways. Nature has programmed it to quickly and efficiently adapt to new environmental conditions. While not many people are aware of this, thanks to advancements in science and civilization, we have many tools in our society designed to help shape our minds. Yes, that’s right! We can steer how our minds adapt to the demands of the surrounding reality so we can achieve our desired goals. However, I must emphasize that it’s not easy and requires a great deal of perseverance and, most importantly, knowledge of how to do it. To reach our maximum potential in mental training, we must set ourselves new challenges every day.

The following tips will help you train your mind and unlock its full potential. You can practice them on your own, and if you lack motivation, there’s always the option of seeking guidance from a coach who can help you navigate this challenging journey.

The mind is like a fertile garden that requires daily tending to flourish.” – Anthony De Mello

  1. Meditate
    • Meditation might conjure images of sitting in deep concentration for an extended period, but for a mind that’s still groggy, just 10-15 minutes in the morning can suffice. You can meditate while lying in bed, sitting in a comfortable chair, or in your preferred position. During these 10 minutes, focus on your breath and try to find the silence around you. Inhale through your nose, hold for a count of 5, and exhale slowly through your mouth. You’ll find that fewer things irritate you, and you’ll stay more centered.
  2. Read
    • Reading can also be a form of meditation, especially when you’re engrossed in an excellent book that captivates your attention. My morning routine includes reading a few pages. I also make an effort to read while waiting at the doctor’s, dentist’s, or any government office. Not only does this force me to pause for a moment and detach from the surrounding chaos, but it also serves as a great warm-up for the brain, making it more alert.
  3. Draw and Color
    • We used to do this with enthusiasm during childhood, and now scientists have shown that returning to doodling and coloring is beneficial. This simple activity helps with focus, emotional connection, and stress reduction. Plus, it’s enjoyable, which is essential to engage our brains effectively. My favorites are mandalas, which are readily available online.
  4. Solve Crosswords, Sudoku, and Puzzles
    • If you think crosswords are just for older folks, think again. Take a page from their book and start solving crosswords, riddles, rebuses, Sudoku, and puzzles. These exercises are simple but enhance memory, activate your brain, expand your vocabulary, and boost concentration. They train what’s called working memory, keeping your mind sharp for longer.
  5. Learn New Vocabulary
    • If you want to train your mind and learn simultaneously, there’s nothing better than acquiring new words. You can do this in two ways: either by opening a foreign word dictionary and learning challenging Polish words or by learning a foreign language. Try to memorize 5-10 new words, idioms, or phrases daily. Various studies suggest that people who know at least one foreign language can concentrate better, plan effectively, and make more accurate decisions. Their minds operate at a higher level. If you already know English, consider learning another language.
  6. Laugh
    • This is no joke! Our brains enjoy fun. They respond positively to wordplay and jokes. Laughter relaxes us, allowing us to breathe deeply and unwind. If, for some reason, you can’t find anything to laugh about, try putting a pencil between your teeth and holding it there for at least 10 minutes. Your brain will interpret this as a state of contentment, bringing you closer to genuine laughter. Our minds truly appreciate this state.
  7. Worry Less, Do More
    • Negative thoughts and worrying do more harm than good. They make us dwell on the past, which we can’t change, or jump ahead to the future, causing anxiety. This robs us of the joy of the present moment and limits our awareness. Worry and anxiety waste many of our mental abilities. So, instead of worrying, focus on taking action.
  8. Eat Well
    • Your body and mind are connected and synchronized. What you eat and provide to your body significantly impacts not only your physical fitness but, more importantly, your intellectual prowess. Skipping meals, starving yourself, or overindulging in unhealthy processed foods will not benefit you in the long run.
  9. Listen to Music
    • Have you heard of the Mozart effect? Research has shown that listening to the works of this renowned composer has a positive influence on our minds, enhancing our cognitive abilities. While the effect may be short-lived, it’s a delightful way to pamper your brain, even if only momentarily. So, indulge in classical music or calming tunes, as they also have a positive impact.
  10. Keep an Open Mind
    • Instead of closing yourself off to change, practice cognitive flexibility. Look at a given situation and problem from different angles. Not sure where to start? Try a simple exercise by switching your dominant hand. If you’re right-handed, use your left hand to write something, then switch back to your right hand, and repeat. Do this for two or three cycles. If you’re left-handed, start with your right hand. This exercise helps you break away from routine and stimulates your brain. If you find learning new habits challenging, keep persevering, as it’s through constant practice that you’ll continue to train your mind and prevent it from becoming a monotonous routine.

Mental training is much like physical training. To achieve the best results, you must venture out of your comfort zone. You must be strong and unwavering. You should steadily overcome difficulties step by step. When you’ve grown accustomed to a particular task and perform it automatically, it’s a sign that your training in that area is complete. That’s when you should raise the bar to continue training your mind, ensuring it remains a valuable exercise rather than becoming a tedious routine. Good luck, and I’m rooting for you!
